Interac said it began restoring e-Transfer service shortly before 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, “through all financial institutions on a sequential basis,” after it was suspended Friday morning while technical issues were being worked out.

Interac has been doing regular social media updates since the service began having technical problems late Thursday.

While offline, the company has said, any money transfers that are in transit are secure and will be processed when the system is back online.

Interac took its e-Transfer service offline Thursday night to address the technical issue, causing disruptions to a number of customers trying to transfer money online.

By Friday morning, many people were reporting they weren’t able to use the service through several Canadian banks, including Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC, TD Bank and RBC, and were seeing error messages.

Some users took to social media to complain, saying they aren’t able to pay their rent without the service.

“The service disruption was caused by a technology issue,” Interac spokesperson Colleen Harasymchuk told CBC News in an email.

“At no time was any data at risk.”
