Brampton, Ont. MP Ruby Sahota slammed Conservative MPs on Thursday evening for repeatedly referring to conventional Indian apparel as “costumes” throughout their criticisms of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s troubled journey to India, saying their feedback had been “incredibly offensive.”
One of the criticisms levelled at Trudeau in India was that he wore conventional apparel far too usually through the official state go to, and that a few of his clothes selections had been over-the-top.
But Sahota, one among a number of Sikh MPs to accompany Trudeau to India, mentioned the criticism was misguided, and took offence on the language utilized by some Tory MPs on Thursday evening.

“This reference continually made by the Opposition to our clothing being referred to as ‘costumes’ is outrageous. Would you call a business suit a costume?” she mentioned, addressing one Conservative MP immediately, though it wasn’t clear who.
“Should I ask people from around the world about what they think about me wearing a white man’s costume? Are you offended? Because I’m incredibly offended that, again and again, I hear reference to our clothing as costumes. It is not a costume. It is clothing that we wear every day.”
Sahota recounted being made enjoyable of as a toddler because of the conventional clothes worn by her mother and father, and mentioned Trudeau needs to be lauded for respecting Indian traditions throughout his journey.
“I am so happy that my child, my son can see a prime minister today that respects his culture, his tradition and where he comes from,” she mentioned.
Global News has reached out to Sahota to ask which Conservative MPs made the “costume” remark, and is but to obtain a response.

Her remarks got here throughout a House of Commons debate on one of many 260 motions tabled by the Opposition on Thursday evening to arrange practically 21 hours of voting.
