It was a small but loud crowd at Halifax Stanfield International Airport late Monday night when Nova Scotia Olympians Jill Saulnier and Blayre Turnbull returned from the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

The two walked into the arrivals area — both wearing their silver medals — as friends and family waved Canadian flags and cheered for them.

After a big hug, Saulnier placed her medal around her grandmother’s neck, who promptly kissed it and declared, “Oh my gosh! It’s beautiful.”

Turnbull and Saulnier were the first Nova Scotia athletes ever named to the Canadian women’s Olympic hockey team. They were also the only Nova Scotians to compete at this year’s games.

Their team won silver after a heartbreaking shootout loss to the rival Americans.

Canada’s women had won four straight gold medals at the Olympics and had beaten the U.S. in the final for three of them.
