Producers of the Netflix drama The Crown apologized Tuesday to actors Claire Foy and Matt Smith over the revelation that Foy was paid lower than her male co-star.

A producer disclosed final week that Foy — who starred within the first two seasons as Queen Elizabeth II — was paid lower than Smith — who performed Prince Philip — as a result of Smith was higher recognized.

The gender pay hole has change into an enormous subject in Hollywood after revelations that many feminine stars had been paid lower than their male counterparts.

Since information of The Crown pay hole broke, a petition has urged Smith to donate a part of his wage to the Time’s Up marketing campaign, which is campaigning towards sexism and sexual misconduct within the leisure trade.

Production firm Left Bank Pictures mentioned the actors « are not aware of who gets what and cannot be held personally responsible for the pay of their colleagues. »

The Crown traces Elizabeth’s journey from princess to queen, starting within the 1950s. Foy and Smith are being changed by older performers within the present’s subsequent season.
