The Weaselhead Preservation Society has been gathering info for the previous seven years as a part of their southwest Calgary ring highway influence research.

Members have been holding observe of all the things from birds to bears to water high quality. Now, biologists are elevating issues concerning the influence of building noise on fowl populations and the way  roadwork is holding animals from transferring freely.

“Wildlife movement is a huge concern right now,” says native wildlife biologist Lisa Dahlseide. “We assume that there’s fairly a barrier to wildlife motion out and in of the park, which total, might have an effect on genetic range.

“We have been doing the noise monitoring and definitely there’s an increase in noise. It starts at 6:30 in the morning and some nights it goes quite late, and so that will definitely affect the presence of species.”

But Dahlseide says because of citizen involvement, Alberta Transportation has improved the wildlife hall considerably, increasing it and elevating a bridge to accommodate massive mammals getting by way of.

“It was largely as a response to the Weaselhead Preservation Society and the members that sent letters providing that science to back it all up,” Dahlseide says.

“The proper setbacks for the three protected ponds, which includes the beaver pond that we can access in the Weaselhead, are not being enforced. It should be a 30-metre setback and it is not,” says YYC Cares’ Allie Tulick.

“I think Alberta Transportation should be held to a higher standard, especially after losing this appeal hearing. The additional problem we have is that Alberta Environment and Parks is not enforcing what that ministerial order outlines.”

But Alberta Environment and Parks has mentioned the order has been correctly adopted by building crews and that provincial officers have been monitoring the results of the work.
