NDP Health Critic, Don Davies, issued the following statement:
“New Democrats are deeply concerned by the recent outbreak of a novel coronavirus. Officials in China have identified 440 cases and recent reports confirm 17 deaths. Cases have also been confirmed in Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and the United States.
Although no confirmed cases have been reported in our country, international cases of the virus are troubling to Canadians and reinforce the need for on-going monitoring and preparedness.
The federal government must make sure Canadians have timely and complete information. They also need to provide sufficient resources at Canadian ports of entry for screening, particularly at airports.
Canadians expect their government to work in close coordination with provincial and territorial public health authorities, along with international partners like the World Health Organization, to ensure we are prepared to respond to any potential cases of the virus in Canada.”
