NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh marked the 60th anniversary of the NDP by celebrating the legacy of the NDP fighting for people and never giving up on building a better country for all
TORONTO — Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh was joined by former NDP MP Olivia Chow and young people to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the NDP. Singh talked about the legacy of the NDP throughout history always fighting for people no matter how difficult the fight was. When Canadians went through the COVID-19 pandemic, the NDP was there fighting to make sure families got more help by pushing Justin Trudeau’s Liberals to do more than the bare minimum.
“Our first Leader, Tommy Douglas, understood that the power of fighting for people is where you can make change happen for the better,” said Singh. “Fighting for healthcare, fighting to give families the supports they need, fighting for workers — New Democrats fight for people. It’s what we do. Unlike the Liberals and the Conservatives, we put people before large, ultra-rich corporations. New Democrats have the courage to take on the powerful. That’s our vision. We will continue this tradition onward.”
The NDP’s vision is a government that works for people to make their lives better. One of the challenges Canadians will face ahead is the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Workers, their families, young people and small businesses have been hard hit by the pandemic. The recovery should not fall on their backs. But Justin Trudeau’s Liberals refuse to ask the ultra-rich and those who profited off the pandemic to pay their fair share in the recovery. New Democrats will keep fighting to make sure the ultra-rich aren’t off the hook. New Democrats have the courage to ask big box companies and web giants to pay their share, so the burden of the recovery doesn’t fall on the backs of struggling families.
“As the 8th Leader of the NDP, I want to continue our tradition of fighting for people—including in this recovery stage,” said Singh. “Liberals don’t have your backs. But we have seen that the more New Democrats are elected, the more people have somebody in their corner fighting for them.”
